Types of Massage :

Swedish Massage

This is the type that we all hear about. The long relaxing strokes that you find in many spas you enter now a days. Though every massage therapist is different it can be classified as the relaxing form of massage that can increase blood circulation, relax the mind, ease pain, decrease swelling, and much more. The physiological effects that go with Swedish massage are endless.

Myofacial Release

Not many people have heard of this form let alone ever received it. Which is a shame because the benefits that come with this therapy are incredible Myofacial Release is a form of soft tissue therapy used to treat somatic dysfunction and accompanying pain and restriction of motion. This is accomplished by relaxing contracted muscles, increasing circulation, increasing venous and lymphatic drainage, and stimulating the stretch reflex of muscles and overlying fascia. Fascia is connective tissue that connects nearly everything in our bodies. When fascia becomes tightened or overstretched we can begin to feel pain and tension in an area. Without proper release of the Fascia the pain can be regulated but not treated the way it could be if one receives this therapy.

Craniosacral Therapy

Another form of massage that many wouldn’t even assume fit in the category of massage therapy.  A craniosacral therapy session involves the therapist placing their hands on the patient, which allows them to tune into the craniosacral rhythm. The practitioner gently works with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia. In this way, the restrictions of nerve passages are eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spinal cord is optimized, and misaligned bones are restored to their proper position. Craniosacral therapists use the therapy to treat mental stress, neck and back pain, migraines, TMJ Syndrome, and for chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia.

Polarity Massage

Polarity therapy is a synthesis of ancient Eastern and alternative medicine health care ideas, centered on the concept of a human energy field. Using touch, verbal interaction, exercise, nutrition and other methods practitioners of polarity therapy seek to balance and restore the natural flow of energy which,  flows from the universe and into the body through the chakras. The aim is to "balance".

Sports Massage

This massage can be directed towards athletes or even just individuals that work with muscle strengthening, or toning. Cramp management, release of pain or tension, stretching to increase range of motion/flexibility and muscle strengthening can likely be accomplished with this therapy.

Pregnancy Massage

This form says it all in the name. If you’re pregnant and having all the pain and discomfort that comes along with it, this is for you. Lower back pain, stomach discomfort, foot/ankle pain, exhaustion etc...can be worked with using this method of massage. There are also massage techniques to teach the mother how to do some form of infant massage when there child is born to help ease their new born into there new world.

Shiatsu

This massage is hard to explain with words, however, to put it simply it is acupuncture using fingers rather than needles. It works along meridians that correspond with different organs in the body. All meridians have specific points that can be used to help with motion sickness, anxiety, neck pain, headaches, nausea, knee pain, can induce labor, and many many more. This type is typically done on a floor mat and has a huge number of benefits that can be seen immediately by the client.

Cupping Therapy

This is done with glass cups. The cups are placed on the back after all oxygen molecules are removed and can be used to help with pain relief. The cups sucking motion removes blood from the capillaries which causes white blood cells to migrate to that area.  The white blood cells can then rebuild new cells which creates a healing effect that will last for days.

Neuromuscular Therapy

This works with the muscles and the nerves to help relieve lasting pain that can only be relieved when properly releasing the muscle and the specific point on the muscle that is causing the pain It is distinguished from other types of massage in that a static pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating specific areas of skeletal muscle. Often these areas of muscle are myofascial trigger points.
